Cannabidiol As An Epilepsy Treatment For Children

Epilepsy is a horrible disease of the central nervous system.  Electrical signals in the brain misfire. The misfiring of these signals result in communication problems between cells. This ultimately results in a seizure. In over half of childhood, epilepsy cases, there is no known malfunction in any other area of the brain. Often the disease comes from the genetic history. However, there are other causes.  These include malformation of the brain during development, brain tumors, trauma, and other factors that can play a role.

The most common form of treatment is pharmaceuticals. these often make the child drowsy and no longer like “themselves.” This can interfere in their learning ability and motivation to participate in school. More parents are turning to natural solutions because of this. Cannabidiol as an epilepsy treatment for children seems to be the most promising.

Cannabidiol, or CBD is a major non-psychotomimetic compound of the Cannabis Sativa CBD; Treatmentplant. It provides many benefits similar to that of Cannabis, but contains no THC. Therefore, CBD is completely legal in all 50 states. CBD has been shown to carry neuroprotective and neurogenic effects as well as anxiolytic effects in humans and animals. It is currently being used to treat many mental and autoimmune disorders. The current use of CBD as an anti-cancer drug has been shown to be extremely promising. CBD has also been shown to be a great resource when it comes to epilepsy treatment in children. This is due to its amazing effects on the body without the “high” THC gives.

In a federal funded survey study, which can be read more about here, 19 parents with children between the ages of 2 to 16, were using liquid CBD for four months on their children who had not responded to epilepsy treatment before. Each child varied in terms of their cause, frequency and type of seizure. The frequencies ranged from 2 to 250 seizures per day. After each child had been on CBD treatment for four months, the results were collected. The Stanford University institutional review board judged the study and interpreted the data.

The results were absolutely shocking. For example, 16 out of the 19 parents reported a decrease in their child’s seizure frequency. Also, 2 of the 16 reported their child being seizure free. For the remaining 14 parents 8 reported an 80% decrease in seizure frequency while 3 parents reported a 50% decrease and another 3 parents reported a 25% decrease. All 16 parents who found this treatment successful, decided to keep their child on treatment.

These results are absolutely amazing. This study has made it clear that Cannabidiol can be a promising treatment for epilepsy.
